The herds have been under continuous care of the same
veterinary firm since 1964.
Closed Herd Health Information
Prather Ranch Pharmaceutical's closed herds are raised using detailed 'Standard
Operating Procedures' that focus on animal safety and prevention of disease. For example,
all syringes used for vaccinations and injections are immediately disposed of after each
use, thus preventing the spread of disease from blood-born pathogens. The herds
are also routinely tested for various diseases such as Bovine Leukemia.
Additionally, the herds have been tended to by the same veterinary clinic since
its inception. This degree of continuous medical care and supervision,
combined with the on-site genealogical records,
comprise an extensive database of health history for individual
cattle as well as the herd as a whole.
The environments the closed herd cattle are raised in have been
methodically chosen to prevent the interaction between
cattle and other animals, particularly deer. Equal attention has been paid to
the food and water sources that the cattle consume.
The cattle graze on pristine ranch land, where the soil and the water supplies
are routinely tested for non-indigenous trace elements. The ranch also
cultivates the supplemental organically grown feed, thus providing a tightly
controlled and heavily monitored food supply chain for its cattle.
