The primary herd, certified organic by Quality Assurance International,
was closed in 1975 on the maternal side and the backup herd
was closed in 1992. The primary herd constitutes 60% of the closed herd population.
These cattle are raised in the Butte Valley, Siskiyou County on
the Prather Ranch.
Since 1991, artificial insemination has been used to control
reproduction, along with ranch raised clean-up bulls. Individual animal records have been maintained since 1991 for accountability and
traceability.
